Kudos: Third Annual Audubon Magazine Photo Awards
I’m humbled and happy to announce that my photo of an American Kestrel won first place in the Birds category, Professional Division in the Third Annual Audubon Magazine Photo Awards. Audubon editors choose the winner from over 1700 entries. I wrote about my kestrel image here shortly after I made it in February 2011. The magazine page showing my photo and the cover is shown above.
I made this image on a cold, snowy winter day in a local state park. Many folks who see this print at my art shows tell me it looks like a painting. I think this impression is created by the pure white sky that sets off the kestrel and the tree branches in a very clean, graphic way. Photographers usually look for dramatic lighting, clouds or alpenglow colors in their skies. This is one time when a purely white sky really worked for me.
This photo is available for purchase from my Etsy site, or from my Website here.
I hope you enjoy this image.
